ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture, Bhubaneswar celebrated World Soil Day on 5th December, 2022
World Soil Day was celebrated at ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture, Bhubaneswar to create awareness among the farm women for maintaining soil health for sustainable agriculture production. The event was celebrated both off-campus and on-campus. The off-campus celebration was carried out in MGMG village Renghalo, Nimapada, Puri. In this village programme, the women farmers were sensitized about the importance of soil and relevance of celebrating the day. Dr Praveen Jakhar, Sr. Scientist and the Nodal-Officer highlighted about the importance of the soil testing and demonstrated the process of collecting a representative soil sample. Dr Ankita Sahu, Scientist, emphasized on how to maintain the soil health for sustainable agriculture production and Er Pragati Kishore Rout, Sr. Technical Assistant, briefed about the importance of the programme. Additionally, critical inputs such as vegetable seeds (French bean var. Arka Arjun), mineral nutrients (Manganese sulphate, Borax), drudgery reducing tools like improved sickle, low volume sprayer, crates for carrying farm produce etc. were provided to the SC women farmers of the village for the Rabi cultivation. Besides, an in-house programme was also conducted, which was joined by the scientific and technical staffs of the Institute. The AICRP (Women in Agriculture) staff members along with progressive women farmers from Institute’s MGMG, SCSP and Project villages also joined the event through virtual mode. At the outset, the Nodal Officer Dr Praveen Jakhar, Sr Scientist welcomed all the participants to the programme. The Director of the Institute, Dr Anil Kumar during his remarks emphasized the importance of the day and stated about the significance of soil in sustaining life on earth. The programme comprised of an on-line lecture on "Soil Health and Agriculture", presented by Dr Sangeeta Lenka, Sr. Scientist, IISS, Bhopal. The women farmers gained an understanding of the importance of soil in sustaining agriculture and its maintenance through organic practices, natural farming and regenerative agriculture. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Er. Pragati Kishore Rout, Sr. Technical Assistant.
